Beware of reviews from people with only one or two reviews and no profile info. They may be shills for the place they are reviewing. I look for reviews that describe experience rather than just offering a rating with no description.

With that warning, I have used Yelp in many different cities to find where to eat and I have not been disappointed, whether looking for a good restaurant close by or a particular cuisine. Dim sum in Kansas City, MO? Yelped it. Restaurant close to my friend's house in Boulder? Yelped it. A decent dinner near my motel in Chula Vista? Yelped it. All excellent finds, and places I would not have gone without Yelp.

In my home city of Denver, I use Yelp regularly to add good dining prospects. I've gotten to know quite a few people whose tastes are similar to mine, which helps a great deal.

The problem I've had with yelp is that they didn't publish my unfavorable reviews. Well, they did at first. But then they disappeared. When I asked them what happened to them, they gave me some weird statement about them rotating reviews. But I check on them periodically and my negative reviews have never reappeared. I have written a combination of positive and negative reviews. Something smells bad.

How to use Yelp effectively:

1. Look at the distribution of ratings. Places with predominantly 5-stars are worth trying if you like that genre of food.

2. Check out the graph of rating over time. If it is going downhill quickly you may want to skip it.

This works well for me in San Francisco.
