Good article. I agree with a lot of things you said. Thanks for putting this up, I always felt many people who ask "why" were very passive aggressive but could never describe the behavior except that it wasn't the best approach and it has been a pet peeve of mine.

Thanks for the comment Indy, and thanks for recording the session as well! At my session, we were fortunate enough to have a great participant document everything (if I remember correctly, she's a knowledge base author professionally), then I polished it a bit afterwards. Thankfully it was already very complete so I didn't have much work to do :)

As for the diversity of people at that conference, I was really impressed with that too. I'm not sure how those people heard about the conference or why they decided to go, but I definitely enjoyed the variety of opinions and professions there. Hopefully next year will be bigger and better!

It was a great session, thanks for having it. Wanted to point out that the audio recording I took is linked off the infocamp wiki. Feel free to repost that link here or grab the file and upload it to your site. I'm declaring it public domain and we did ask permission of the room before recording.

It isn't a great recording, but it is serviceable and picked up your voice and most of the voices of the participants. It is 53:47 long and 39MB. I'm also impressed at the thoroughness of wiki documentation and how quickly that documentation got put up. You'd almost think there were professional information handlers/document writers taking the notes. How did the conference manage to attract those sorts of people?

Thanks for the comment, Ben. You make a good point - I should be clearer which values and principles are agile versus not agile. Maybe a better way to phrase it is "agile development is when you follow the principles of the agile manifesto in creating a better development team in your organization."

Or maybe "Agile development is when you finally come to your wits and decide that democracy is a better form of organization than communism." :)

I love the post! ... but I disagree with your definition.

"Agile development is a set of values and principles for improving your development teams' alignment with your organization's needs."

Too many things fit that. Shorter waterfall duration. Making engineers sign off on specifications. Replacing your architecture with something that is easier to build new features on.

I propose one level more specific/prescriptive: "Agile is a exchange made between an organization and the engineers building the product: In exchange for radically increased visibility into engineering's overall and individual progress, engineers can self-determine the tasks they choose to work on."

This more naturally leads to the ceremony common in SCRUM - standups, backlogs, burn-down charts, etc.
